In an attempt to make classical ballet more accessible to the general public, the Royal Ballet has decided to shoot live performances from their repertoire and make them available in the cinema in the UK as well as overseas.
One of the most successful performances shown in the British cinemas was Giselle, with Marianela Nuñez and Rupert Pennefather in January 2011. Although watching ballet in cinemas may not be as exciting as being in a traditional opera house, it is possible to see the variations in detail for more affordable prices (approximately £19). The next available dates for the next season are as follows:
- Thursday 15 December 2011 The Sleeping Beauty (The Royal Ballet live)
- Thursday 22 March 2012 Romeo and Juliet (Royal Ballet live)
- Wednesday 16 May 2012 La Fille Mal Gardée (The Royal Ballet live)
If you happen to be in London on the above dates, it is worth checking it out. Further information on these performances are available on the Royal Opera House and Opus Arte websites. Alternatively, you may wish to follow the Ballet News for further announcements on casting and venues.
